Ullage
The name

What ullage means, and why a software studio is named after it.

Ullage is the empty space left in a container — originally the gap below the cork in a wine barrel, later the unfilled volume in a rocket's fuel tank. In spaceflight, small ullage motors fire before the main engine to push floating propellant down against the intake so ignition is possible at all.

The wine meaning came first

The word travels from Latin oculus — the eye, the bung hole of a barrel — through the Old French ouillage, the amount of wine needed to top a barrel back up. Coopers cared about it because the empty space is where the wine spoils. In a cellar, ullage is a problem to be filled.

Then rocketry borrowed it

Engineers took the same word for the unfilled volume in a propellant tank, and there it stops being a defect and becomes a mechanism. Fuel expands, gases collect, and the tank has to leave room for both. The empty space is not waste; it is the tolerance that keeps the tank from bursting.

The ullage motor

In free fall the propellant floats away from the intake and the engine cannot draw it, so a large burn simply will not start. The fix is a small motor that fires first and pushes everything to settle at the bottom of the tank. Nothing about that push is glamorous. Without it, the big burn does not happen.

Why we took the name

Because that is the shape of the work. Companies rarely lack ambition or fuel; what they lack is the small, unglamorous push that settles everything so the real burn can start. A six-week engagement is not the mission. It is the ullage motor: brief, deliberately small, and the reason ignition is possible.

And the 66%

The mark that runs through the site is the fill level. Full is not the goal — a tank filled to the brim has nowhere to expand and cannot light. The useful level leaves room. It is a better metaphor for building software than any of the ones about rockets going up.

Straight answers

How do you pronounce ullage?

UH-lij, rhyming with village. Two syllables, stress on the first. In Spanish it is usually said as 'úlash' or simply spelled out — either is fine with us.

Is ullage a wine word or a rocket word?

Both, and the wine use is older. It means the empty space in a container in either case; only the consequence changes. In a barrel that space spoils the wine, and in a rocket it is what makes ignition possible.
